NUMERO XVII: Escaping Reality through a Series of Numbers

With the theme “Escaping Reality through a Series of Numbers”, Society of Applied Mathematics of UPLB conducted Numero XVII held at Math Building Lecture Hall last March 16.

Numero XVII is a general information quiz contest that aims to promote the relevance of Applied Mathematics to the Philippine society, where the answers are strictly numbers. This year’s Numero is about American TV series.

From 59 participating teams, Team 7K emerged victorious as they earned the highest score on the three rounds - Easy, Average, and Difficult. While Team Pagpag and Team First & Last Take grabbed 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

“It was extremely fun, yet surprisingly challenging. It's very challenging in a way that even the micro details of a series were asked in the quizcon. I felt like the quizcon encouraged the students to be keen observers even to the most detailed part of a series. And so, I can say that a student who was not watching any tv series before will now be curious why is it many students are addicted in watching tv series. So the event was not just a simple quizcon, but it made an impact as well to those who do not watch tv series at all. However, the hour-delay of the event made the students a bit disappointed since even before 7pm, the queue was really long already. It made the students wait for an hour long. Nevertheless, the fun, excitement, and challenging questions of the quizcon compensated all the delay of the event. So thumbs up to Numero XVII,” Allen Bernabe, BS Mathematics Batch 14, said in an interview.

Moreover, several students also received prizes from answering online questions posted on Facebook. JZ Samson bagged P300 worth of cash, while Rennard Marquez won P200 worth of Eatsumo Gift Certificate.

Furthermore, Numero XVII would not be possible without its sponsors namely Actuarial Science Society (ActSS), Society of Math Majors (SMM), Operations Research Society of the Philippines-UPLB Chapter (ORSP), Beeyanka’s, Parduch, and Eat Sumo Teri Haus.
