In order to broaden students’ understanding and appreciation of Mathematics and its application to the real world, Society of Applied Mathematics of UPLB conducted its fifth installment of Math In Action (MIA) held at Royal Palm Leisure Park, Brgy. Puypuy, Bay, Laguna, Feb. 11-12.
Math In Action is a two-day Mathematics camp open for high school students from public and private schools across the country. To entail the aim of the camp, this two-day event is composed of fun-filled Mathematics-related activities such as Investigatory Project, Parallel Workshops, Mathmazing Race, Math Rumble and Seminar.

Pegged with the theme “Redesigning the Digital World through Mathematics”, this year’s camp emphasizes on the application of Mathematics on Media, Games, Photography, Animation and Gadgets.
Let’s Do It To Learn It!

Participants showcased their skills and competencies during the presentations of Investigatory Project on the first day of the said camp. Students strived to come up with the most original idea and create a Mathematical project out of it such as games, puzzles and devices and present it in front of a panel of judges – Mr. Jomar Rabajante, Mr.Mark Jayson Cortez, and Ms. Destiny Lutero.
The Seed Montessori School grabbed the top spot with their project entitled “Brachistochrone Drainage Design: An Alternative Model to Storm Pipeline Systems”. While Marcial O. Ranola Memorial High School seized the second and third place with their projects entitled “Pokepuzz” and “Pokemon XY Plot ‘em All”, respectively.
Meanwhile, parallel workshops intensified and honed the students’ knowledge about Mathematics in Media, Games, Photography, Animation and Gadgets.

“Marami po akong natutunan sa Parallel Workshops pero sa Gaming po familiar na po sakin ‘yung mga tinuro. Tapos sa Animations po ako maraming natutunan about sa mga complicated equations and solutions para makagawa ng animations na kahit simple lang ay pinaghihirapan na po pala. Doon ko po naappreciate yung mga gumagawa ng animations gamit ang Microsoft”, Sunny Dy from Saint Matthew of Academy Cavite proclaimed.
Simultaneously, Praxis, a board game led by Sun Life Financial Inc. which demonstrates financial planning, was played by the teachers from the participating schools. Budgeting, saving and investing in stocks were tackled in this game. It also showed real life events such as getting a promotion, losing a job, and being hospitalized to let the players decide on what they are going to do in these real life scenarios.

We ran, we played, we won!
Students perked up their competencies during the Mathmazing Race where 20 teams battled and encountered 25 different challenges primarily based on logic games and puzzles, optimization problems and other brain challenging playoffs that require teamwork.

Additionally, the top five teams that got the highest scores played on the Math Rumble which consist of series of activities based on applications of mathematics, on a different and a whole new exciting levels.
Moreover, team Fourly Shells emerged victorious as they earned the highest score in the Math Rumble competition.
“Ang saya po sobra ng MIA 2017 experience ko. Tulad po noong 2015, madami na naman akong natutunan. Tapos ang saya din ng mga games”, Jaycel Mae Ford from My Messiah School of Cavite stated.

The said event was attended by over 300 high school students and faculty representing 23 different schools coming from different parts of the country such as Alpha Angelicum Academy, Batangas Eastern Colleges, Bato Rural Development High School, Casa Del Niño School Systems Inc., Christian Values Incorporated, Divine Grace Montessori and High School of Pangasinan, Immaculate Conception School of Baliuag, Jose Maria College, Kalayaan National High School, La Salle College of Antipolo, Mabini Colleges Inc., Makati High School, Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School, My Messiah School of Cavite, O.B. Montessori Center- Greenhills, Paiisa National High School, Parañaque National High School Main, San Jose National High School, Santa Maria Academy, St. Matthew Academy of Cavite, The Seed Montessori School and Unida Christian Colleges.

The two-day math camp has once again made its impact to high school students nationwide and has prepared them to tackle the digital world with their mathematical skills. Furthermore, MATH IN ACTION 2017 would not be possible without its sponsors namely Abiva Publishing House Inc., Hanarose Sizzlers, Kopiko 78⁰C, Philippine Carabao Center, Red Cross Youth - UPLB, Sun Life Financial, The UPLB Com Arts Society, UPLB Choral Ensemble, UPLB Street Jazz Dance Company, and When In Manila.
