SAM-UP Wins Big at WaCASan 2016


Society of Applied Mathematics of UPLB (SAM-UP) copped the grand slam victory as they snatched the Over-all Championship in the WaCASan 2016 held at Lakewood Clubhouse Resort, Pansol, Laguna, November 26.

SAM-UP perked up sports competence in this year’s PalaCASan, starting with the major games – basketball and volleyball. Riding high on consecutive armalite shots and a steel-barrack defense, SAM-UP brods clobbered their way to championship battle and clutched the 2nd place in Basketball, Men’s category. While SAM-UP spikers conquered 3rd place as they initiated fier

y services, overpowering blocks and penetrating spikes during the Volleyball semi-finals.

Several special awards were also received by some of the members. Archimedes Hagupit and Mattina Yee were one of the Mythical 6 in Volleyball; Kevin Cruz was announced as the Rookie of the Year; Ian Abella was named as one of the Mythical 5 in Basketball; Abigail Tayas, Johnsen Secreto, Ian Abella and Kevin Cruz were also part of the Fantasy Team; and Mattina Yee was declared as the Athlete of the Year.

Meanwhile, SAM-UP players showed their proficiencies in the minor games. Omar Francisco showcased wise decision and swift tactics to stun his opponents and grabbed the 2nd place against COSS in the Chess tournament.

Ascending to supremacy, Ardenzo Gonzalvo, Mattina Yee and Monique Yglesias annihilated shuttlers in the badminton competition after they swallowed their opponents with their powerful smashes. With his dynamic forehand drives and tactical drop shots, Gonzalvo managed to sweep his foes in Men’s Badminton. While Yee showed eagerness to win in Women’s category as she dominated her opponent. Likewise, Yglesias and Ardenzo ruled the Doubles category.

Moreover, with his intense strength and agility, Ghio Gonzales out distanced his opponents as he reached 1st place in 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash in the Track and Field event, Men’s category. While Bettina Abilgos exerted her tremendous efforts and power making her hit the 3rd place in the 200 meter dash, Women’s category. Joi Librea, Earl Bernardo, Gonzales and Abilgos finished 1st place in the relay category.

SAM-UP swimmers rounded off in the Swimming competition by finishing 2nd place in the 25 meter freestyle (Men’s category), 2nd place in 100 meter freestyle and 2nd place in the 100 meter medley.

In addition, using his spin ball moves and good service tactics, Sean Eugenio inundated his opponents and landed on the 2nd place in Table Tennis, Men’s category. Likewise, Eugenio and Camille Fernandez whipped their opponents winning the match in the Doubles Category.

Furthermore, with her alluring beauty and spectacular answer in the Q&A portion, Alecia Canga was hailed 3rd runner up in the Mr. and Ms. PalaCASan competition.

With the theme “PalaCASan 2016: Bumabangon. Lumalaban. Manlalaro ng Bayan”, this year’s PalaCASan, the official sports fest of the College of Arts and Sciences, spearheaded by UPLB Genetics Society was joined by 14 organizations namely – Cells, Chemo, ChemSoc, CoSS, CPS Triangle, GeneSoc, MASS, MicroSoc, Ozooms, Phileos, Physika, SAM-UP, STATS and SMM.

“The recently concluded PalaCASan was definitely one for the books for GeneSoc as this was the first time we hosted such activity outside of our usual endeavors. From finances to logistics to technicals and the sem-long activity as a whole, everything about PalaCASan really tested our diligence and dedication to the work we have committed. We also acknowledge the fact that there were flaws in the scheduling system and we really are sorry for the inconveniences that we have caused to the participating orgs. Nonetheless, we are really grateful to have hosted PalaCASan and all the lessons we learned from this experience will be embedded in the org's future endeavors”, Genesoc noted.
