Move Forward with Manulife

LOS BANOS, LAGUNA – In order to broaden students’ Actuarial Science awareness, the Society of Applied Mathematics of UPLB, in partnership with Manulife and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, conducted a career orientation on Actuarial Science last November 07 at Math Building Lecture Hall.

The orientation started with an ice breaker from one of the organization’s alumni, Mr. Adrian Llamado. He presented three questions about Probability and Finance Mathematics and asked the students to answer them. He also shared his experience and works as an Actuary.

With the theme “Move Forward with Manulife”, the said orientation was headed by two experts in Manulife Business Processing Service (MBPS) – Mr. Carlo Tenedero and Mr. Jerico Sandoval. They shared their expertise and knowledge in the Actuarial Science field.

Mr. Carlo Tenedero, Director of Actuarial Valuations in MBPS, expanded on his experiences regarding being an Actuary. He gave a lecture about the job of an actuary and the skills necessary to be an accomplished one at that. He also emphasized that although the work of an actuary is challenging and intellectual, you have the ability to earn a salary while pursuing Fellow Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation.

“You should set personal development goals. You should be willing to sacrifice now, like your time and your enjoyment, ‘cause at the end it will be all worth it. And there is no such thing as bad job. You just have to focus on the positive side of things, on what is more important. Actuaries add value to the society”, Tenedoro stated.

On the other hand, Mr. Jerico Sandoval, Actuarial Manager, discussed the skills needed to be able to work in actuarial field. He also lectured on the stages of an actuarial career and his story as he go pursue this career.

“Always challenge yourself. Everytime you fail, you should always challenge yourself to be better. Do not quit and never settle for failure”, Sandoval added.

Meanwhile, the said orientation was attended by interested students who wanted to take up Actuarial Science as their career or just interested in this field.

“Actuary is a very prestigious career that no one has ever heard of. If you really wanted to follow this career, you should start taking exams now. Exams are very important especially in the industry where people are really competitive”, Tenedero ended.
